Bedtime battles between parents and kids are a common occurrence that can leave everyone exhausted and frustrated. But what if there’s a deeper reason behind this nightly conflict? One TikTok creator claims to have the answer. In this article, we explore the insights shared by parents, sleep specialists, and parent coaches throughout the Internet, shedding light on the contradiction in needs between kids and parents when it comes to going to bed.

Why Parents Hurry Bedtime
Parents often feel overwhelmed and look forward to some alone time once the kids are asleep. Here’s why parents may rush through the bedtime routine and the impact it can have on children. The TikToker, Cayla, explains the role of parental stress and anxiety and offers advice on being patient with kids during bedtime.

Why Children Resist Bedtime
Children resist bedtime for various reasons, including a desire for more time with their parents and a fear of separation. We dive into the insights shared by experts, highlighting factors such as fear of missing out (FOMO), self-regulation challenges, and personality traits that contribute to bedtime resistance. Understanding these factors can help parents address their children’s needs more effectively.
Additionally, according to Daniel Huerta, a parenting expert, mental health professional, and author with extensive experience in the field, there are additional factors that contribute to bedtime feeling more like a power struggle rather than a peaceful wind-down. Huerta emphasizes that children may grapple with challenges such as a lack of self-control, difficulties in self-regulation, or specific personality traits that make the bedtime routine more demanding and complex. These factors can intensify the resistance and create a sense of tension during the process. Recognizing and addressing these underlying issues can help parents approach bedtime with empathy and tailor their strategies to better support their child’s unique needs.

How to Ease Bedtime Battles
Fortunately, there are strategies parents can implement to make bedtime smoother and less stressful. One technique recommended by Dr. Huerta is the “high fives” exercise. By extending your hand with all five fingers out, you can engage your child in a positive conversation or focus on things they enjoy. This helps them to have positive thoughts and creates a sense of joy and contentment before going to bed.
Additionally, tapping into their imagination can be a fun and effective tactic. Encourage your child to set up their stuffed animals as “watchers” throughout the room. By placing these toys strategically, they can feel a sense of control and security, knowing their furry friends are keeping an eye on potential nighttime fears.

Remember, the journey to a good night’s sleep takes time and patience, but with understanding and adaptability, you can transform bedtime into a cherished bonding experience for the whole family.
