There’s a box at Wimbledon known as the Royal Box, and if you’re wondering who is allowed to sit there, the name gives you a big clue. However, this box isn’t only used for royals. So who is it for?

The Wimbledon Royal Box

This Wimbledon box has been reserved for royals and their guests since 1922. It’s on the south side of Centre Court, and it has a star-studded guest list that includes more than just members of the British royal family.

The royal box can seat up to 74 people. The wicker chairs are dark green, and designed by Lloyd Loom. The box comes with several rules that one must follow if invited to sit there.

Famous Guests in the Box

Everyone in the box must follow a certain dress code if they want to gain entrance. The men are usually attired in dress pants, shirt, tie, and jacket. The ladies are asked not to wear hats so that they don’t interfere with the view of anyone sitting behind them.

Other than the royal family, heads of state, important people in the world of tennis, dignitaries, and prominent media people have all graced the royal box. These seats have also been available to individuals if a member of the royal family specifically invites them.

After the Match

Meghan Markle attended in 2018, along with Princess Kate Middleton, to watch the women’s singles final match. Prince George made his first appearance in 2022, looking handsome and dashing, sporting a suit and tie. David Beckham and his mom have also been spotted enjoying the big event.

Once the tennis match is finished, guests of the royal family box are invited to attend a small party in the clubhouse. The party often includes food and drinks. This is almost as coveted as the box, as the guest list often reads as a who’s who. Important contacts are frequently forged in this social gathering.
